Every year April 22nd is set aside to focus on the earth … and how we can all do better at taking care of the earth.

At Mansfield Plumbing, we continue to concentrate on recycling efforts. Our 24/7 operation means that we do indeed have items to recycle. From the soda cans that employees use daily to our old plaster molds, we recycle millions of pounds of materials each year. In 2016 alone we recycled millions of pounds of fired scrap and spent plaster molds, plus thousands of pounds of cardboard and cartons, paper, plastic and wooden pallets.

We pay just as much attention to recycling a plastic water bottle as we do to paper in our offices to our fired scrap materials. Everything gets a new life through our recycling efforts. Our mindset makes it a routine procedure for team members to recycle.

We encourage you to do your part for the environment. Whether it’s turning off lights when you’re not in a room or recycle used newspapers, every step is important.

Creating a quality product is hard work. For some companies, when a piece comes off a manufacturing line with the wrong imprint, a slightly scratched frame or a blemish, the flawed item is oftentimes designated for the recycling bin.

At Mansfield Plumbing in Perrysville, Ohio, where more than a million toilets and sinks are crafted each year, millions of pounds of fired scrap and spent plaster molds are recycled annually. Instead of going into landfills, the material is used as road aggregate.

Additionally, the small-town facility is making a big difference by recycling 285,000 pounds of cardboard and cartons, 4,000 pounds of paper, 1,000 pounds of plastic and 5,200 wooden pallets each year. The company also saves about four million gallons of water a year through its water conservation program designed to reduce water usage by 10 percent at its manufacturing facility.

According to the environmental team at Mansfield Plumbing, the goal is to recycle and reuse as much raw material as possible. Along with being aggressive in recycling hard materials, the company also salvages the waste heat from its kilns and operates with gas consumption lower than industry standards. A lighting project designed to use wattage more effectively saves energy in the plant.

We know we’re a few days early. Earth Day is Friday, April 22nd …but we couldn’t wait to share the great news about our recycling efforts.

Mansfield - Pic - Recycling CHINA in DumpsterAt Mansfield Plumbing, the quantity of recycled materials is impressive. Ten million pounds of fired scrap, 10 million pounds of spent plaster molds, 330,000 pounds of cardboard and cartons, 8,900 pounds of paper, 3,000 pounds of plastic and 6,000 wooden pallets.

“We recycle 100 percent of our fired scrap and spent plaster mold material, which is about 10,000 tons of material each year,” says Ed Tinoco, P.E., environmental engineer at Mansfield Plumbing in Perrysville, Ohio.  “Instead of going into landfills, this material is used as road aggregate that actually leads up to landfill areas.”

In addition to the massive amount of fired scrap and spent plaster, Mansfield Plumbing recycles 330,000 pounds each year of cardboard and cartons that are sorted, cleaned and sold to paper mills that use the reprocessed material by manufacturing it into a variety of paper products. Six thousand unusable wooden pallets are either refurbished or made into mulch material. And, 3,000 pounds of plastic, 8,900 pounds of paper and 520 pounds of aluminum cans are also recycled yearly. Finally, the company has initiated a water conservation program designed to reduce water usage by 10 to 30 percent at its manufacturing facility.

Mansfield - Pic - Recycling - bulldozer            “Our efforts don’t stop with just the hard materials you can physically see in our plant,” says Tinoco. “We actually recycle energy. Waste heat from our kilns is recovered and used in both the drying process of our sanitaryware and to heat our water for factory operations.

“Additionally, we’ve reduced the natural gas needed to operate our plant. We estimate our gas consumption to be about 10 percent below the industry standard on a per pound measurement. We also undertook a lighting project in 2008 that has helped us save about 50 percent of the energy over our previous lighting system.”

March 11 is a bit of a strange day. It’s Johnny Appleseed Day, Oatmeal Nut Waffles Day and World Sleep Day. More importantly, it’s also World Plumbing Day.

Look at November 19 and you’ll see that there are many fun days celebrated on that date also, including Mother Goose Day, National Day of Play and Rocky and Bullwinkle Day. However, it’s also World Toilet Day, which has a much more serious element.

55

What do these two “bathroom days” have in common? Even though they’re separated by several months on the calendar, they both strive to focus attention on the need for improved sanitation around the world. Developing countries in particular have insufficient or non-existing plumbing, leading to illness and death.

According to the World Health Organization, 1.1 billion people do not have access to safe water supplies and 2.5 billion people do not have access to improved sanitation. The World Toilet Day organization reports that improved sanitation can enhance nutrition and improved health.

At Mansfield Plumbing, we applaud the efforts of leaders at the World Plumbing Council and the United Nations for shining a spotlight on the needs for improved sanitation conditions throughout the world.

If you’re older than 30, you may remember when toilets used a lot of water … like 3.5 gallons per flush (gpf) or more. Not anymore. Today water-efficient toilets starting at just 1.0 gpf are key to helping save water.

Back in 1989, Connecticut was the first state to put water efficiency standards in place. After a handful of other states adopted similar laws, the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 1992 was put in place to set minimum efficiency standards for all toilets, showers, urinals and faucets manufactured in the U.S. beginning in 1994.

Severe drought conditions in several areas of the country, coupled with conscious efforts to save water, have led 10 states to adopt strict water efficiency legislation. As you might imagine, California and Nevada lead the way … but Texas, Colorado, Georgia and other states are not are not far behind.

Mansfield - Pic - Brentwood HETThe same drought conditions that made states adopt new laws have also been the motivation for Mansfield Plumbing to develop more high efficient toilets (HET). We recently introduced the Brentwood HET with 1.28 Gpf. This latest HET joins a wide range of other products we make in almost every product line that are qualified as HET. We also make HEU products — High Efficiency Urinals — like our Brevity and Cascade urinals for commercial projects.

You can expect to see Mansfield Plumbing adding more HET and HEU products in the years to come. As the marketplace demands products that meet WaterSense standards, we’ll keep “upping our game” to produce competitive toilets and urinals that require less water and have stronger mass removal power.

What’s the room in the home most visited during a normal day? You guessed it — the bathroom! As a focal part of the home, it makes sense to take a critical eye to your bathroom for comfort, style, water efficiency and energy efficiency. During Energy Awareness Month, Mansfield Plumbing has some tips to share!

Mansfield - Pic - Barrett Suite

For style, check out the Affordable Style Designer Series suite collection from Mansfield that provides coordinated tubs, toilets and sinks. And for comfort, nothing beats SmartHeight toilets that meet ADA requirements. These “tall toilets” make it easier to sit and stand up, especially for taller people or those with special needs.

For water efficiency, WaterSense rated toilets with 1.28 gallons per flush (Gpf) or lower help save water each time the toilet is used. These powerful low water use toilets are designed to remove waste yet can save on the use of water.

When it comes time to look at energy efficiency in the bathroom, start with your lighting. Many bathrooms have several light fixtures above the mirror near the sink. Replacing those light bulbs with ENERGY STAR qualified bulbs is a big step toward saving energy. Making sure that the lights and fan are turned off when exiting the bathroom can also help save on energy bills in the home.

Some designs, such as the Cascade high efficiency toilet (HET) from Mansfield Plumbing, even promote health. Its rimless design eliminates the germs and bacteria that hide in difficult-to-access areas. Both the round front bowl and elongated SmartHeight bowl design are approved to meet EPA standards for water efficiency, using just 1.28 gallons per flush — a savings of 20 percent more water than older models.

California’s epic drought has focused nationwide attention on saving water during today’s 2015 Earth Day events. From washing machines to dishwaters to bathing, the home is a key area for personal water usage. According to WaterSense®, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency program, toilets alone account for almost 30 percent of residential indoor water consumption.

cascade-clean-green

“Every time a toilet is flushed, water is used to remove the waste from the bowl,” says Adriana Miller, product manager for Mansfield Plumbing. “WaterSense rated toilets use just 1.28 gallons per flush (GpF) or less, as opposed to some older, inefficient toilets that use up to 3.5 Gpf.

“Manufactured to be water efficient, WaterSense rated high efficiency toilets (HETs) save water in the home, which can help our environment, and reduce yearly water bills for consumers. It’s a win-win situation.”

WaterSense seeks to protect the future of our nation’s water supply by offering suggestions for using less water with water-efficient products. Low-flow toilets earning the WaterSense label — like many offered by Mansfield Plumbing — have been certified to be at least 20 percent more efficient without sacrificing performance.

Miller recommends homeowners visit the Water Savings Calculator to determine just how much water and money a family can save by investing in a WaterSense rated toilet with a powerful flushing system. For example, a family of four can potentially save 16,206 gallons of water each year (with an average five flushes a day per person) when installing a 1.28 Gpf toilet over a 3.5 Gpf toilet. That equates to about $81 in savings. When installing a 1.0 Maverick or Quantum toilet, the figures drop even further, to savings 18,250 gallons of water yearly or about $91 in water bills.

Mansfield's Enso Pedestal Sink

“For many areas of the country, it’s not about the cost savings, but about the fact that there simply isn’t enough water availability,” says Miller. “Taking the step to invest in HETs makes good sense for communities, the environment and for homeowners.”

Miller points out that several states (including California and Texas) mandate the use of WaterSense rated HETs for all new residential and commercial construction. A “water drain” on the environment comes when older toilets are not replaced with newer low-flow toilets.

“WaterSense has estimated that if all old, inefficient toilets in the United States were replaced with WaterSense labeled models, we could save 520 billion gallons of water each year,” says Miller. “That’s impressive. It’s roughly the amount of water that flows over Niagara Falls in about 12 days. This change to low-flow toilets is something that every homeowner can do right now to help save water and celebrate Earth Day every day throughout the year.”

Mansfield offers a wide variety of toilets that meet or exceed the WaterSense standards. These include the 1.28 Gpf Alto, Summit, Cascade, Aegean, Quantum, Enso, Waverly, Barrett, Montclair and Essence toilets plus the 1.0 Gpf Maverick and Quantum toilets.
