We pay just as much attention to recycling a plastic water bottle as we do to paper in our offices to our fired scrap materials. Everything gets a new life through our recycling efforts. Our mindset makes it a routine procedure for team members to recycle.

At the age of 72, Kline has no anticipation of retiring. He enjoys his work, is blessed with good health and wants to keep on trucking — literally. As a truck driver for the sanitaryware and bathware company, Kline can travel between 350 to 500 miles a day making customer deliveries of toilets, sinks and tubs.

“I love talking to our customers, being on the road and working for this company so why would I retire?” says Kline, a resident of Perrysville, Ohio. “My health has always been really good and this is a great team to be a part of, so I’m going to keep working as long as possible!”

Hired on January 30, 1965 at the age of 20 as a clean-up person at the Mansfield manufacturing facility in Perrysville, Ohio, Kline relishes his work and his family. The father of 11, grandfather of 38 and great-grandfather of eight, Kline is keeping a family tradition going strong at Mansfield Plumbing.

“During my lifetime I’ve seen two of my children work at Mansfield, three of my brothers and a variety of other family members,” says Kline. “This place is part of all of us.”

Married for 52 years to his wife Lois, Kline has been actively involved in his community his entire life. He coached basketball and softball at the high school level for decades and is a member of the Mohican Area Community Fund.

Kline spent his first 18 years with Mansfield as an inspector/grader of sanitaryware products as they came out of the kiln. “I checked for cracks and blemishes to make sure the quality was there for each and every piece that went out the door,” says Kline. “About 34 years ago I decided to try driving a truck. That’s been a terrific job because I’ve been able to make deliveries to every state east of the Mississippi River.

“For awhile I was shuttling product from our plant to our warehouse. Now I’m back to making deliveries to customers throughout Ohio. On any given day I could be in Dayton, Columbus or Cincinnati. This is a great job that allows me to meet with our customers. I’m planning on staying healthy enough to continue for several more years!”

“Our contributions locally in 2016 were the greatest our company has ever made in a single year,” according to Natalie Thomas, vice president of human resources for Mansfield Plumbing. “We give top priority to organizations our current or past employees are connected to and then strong consideration to activities in our immediate geographic manufacturing areas.”

From hams donated to the Mansfield fire station during the Thanksgiving holiday to constant support of high school and booster club programs, Mansfield Plumbing plays an integral role in community activities.

“Each donation request, whether it’s for cash or product, is reviewed and analyzed carefully,” says Thomas. “We give equal consideration to a request for $100 to support a local elementary school as we would a $1,000 request for the robotics team at the Loudonville high school. Being a responsible, involved member of our communities helps Mansfield Plumbing stay connected with our employees and the places where we work and live.”

During the past five years, Mansfield Plumbing has made more than 275 donations locally totaling $128,180 to support communities in Ohio and Texas where the company has manufacturing operations.

The nationwide sweepstakes, sponsored by Mansfield Plumbing Products, was open to thousands of licensed plumbers and contractors purchasing Summit toilets between May 1 and September 30, 2016. Barbour, who took his wife Libby on the first ride of the motorcycle that was presented on December 6, 2016, still can’t believe he won the grand prize.

“I never win at drawings, so I was truly surprised,” says Barbour. “Everyone here was excited for me and maybe just a little jealous.”

Barbour and his 20 employees purchase their plumbing needs from Hughes Supply Ft. Myers. Gio Giraldo, management trainee with Hughes Supply, remembers the winning sale that earned Barbour the motorcycle.

“John came in looking for a top quality toilet,” says Giraldo. “His company had been purchasing Alto^® toilets but this time he was set on a competitor’s toilet. Then I talked him into trying a Summit toilet. That one decision got him a great toilet … and the incredible Harley-Davidson motorcycle!”

Pember says that this push toward cleaner toilets is being addressed by unique changes in toilet products by many manufacturers. “From the development of easier to clean glazes on the toilet to advanced developments of waste removal to built in washing treatments, manufacturers are working hard to answer the demand from consumers for cleaner toilets,” says Pember.

“We’re closely following industry trends and have already introduced the PuraClean^TM bacteria-resistant glaze finish for toilets this year. We plan to develop even more ways to address this cleanliness issue in the future.”

Water-Saving High-Performance Toilets

According to Pember the desire for reliable, high-performing sanitaryware products is a recurring trend that ties in with the desire for low water usage of toilets.

“We said last year that water efficient toilets are here to stay and we stand behind that statement,” says Pember. “Homeowners want one-flush confidence while knowing they’re minimizing water usage.

            “As manufacturers, we’re continually trying to ‘up our game’ by developing products that answer this demand. We did that this year by introducing the Denali^TM Power Flush toilet — which moves 1,200 grams of waste with just 1.6 Gpf.”

Pember points out that WaterSense^® toilets, which generally use 1.28 Gpf or less water, remain top sellers in the industry. “In the drought-ridden areas of our country every drop of water counts,” says Pember. “Many builders, remodelers, plumbers and homeowners are reviewing their options for toilets using less water. This can include dual-flush toilets that use a lower quantity of water to remove liquid waste compared to using slightly more water to remove solid waste.”

Gary Pember, Vice President of Marketing at Mansfield Plumbing relates that Made in America is a trend influencing industry sales. “Whether because it’s an election year or people are tired of waiting for products shipped from overseas, there’s a strong request right now for Made in America sanitaryware products,” says Pember. “Certainly we know products made in the USA mean more employment of Americans, faster delivery times and provide a smaller carbon footprint compared to imported products. However, the current push right now also appears more ‘patriotic’ than in previous years.”

Recent research shows that almost eight out of 10 American consumers show preference to purchasing an American-made product than an imported one.* In the same survey, more than 60 percent of those interviewed said they would also be willing to pay 10 percent or more for American-made products. This supports the 2012 findings of the Boston Consulting Group that shows more than 80 percent of consumers in the United States said they would be willing to pay a higher price for American-made goods than for those products made in China.**

Operations at Mansfield Plumbing have accelerated to meet the growth of current orders and anticipated product demand for 2017. The company hired a record number of people in 2016 and now employs almost 700 American workers.

“Even though we’re incorporating more robotics into our operations, we continue to hire people on an ongoing basis,” says Pember. “The increased automation makes it better and easier for people to work in the plants by having machines do some of the heavy lifting. Robotics help increase efficiencies in our plants along with allowing us to quickly and resourcefully manufacture products.

            “These advances are important because we’re preparing for 2017 — a year when we plan to grow our product offerings with toilets that meet all the trends of cleanability, performance and environmental that are desired by consumers.”
